Çalış Car Boot Sale
Named from the time when British communities met in fields or car parks and sold items from their cars’ trunks, the ‘car boot sale’ has reached to Mediterranean shores and apparently it claims success. Car boot sales are about to be a popular weekend activity and a practical, and modestly lucrative way to clear clutter from the attic or selling crafts and home produce.
The sales, the first ones in S.W. Turkey, are now famous throughout the area, attracting buyers and sellers from as far away as Marmaris, Kaş and Kalkan. They are held in the car park next to the Bahar Hotel on Çalış seafront and soon would be expanding to take in the land opposite the car park. The monthly Sunday car boot sales organised by the Çalış Children’s charity, and they are not only a hunting ground for bargains and a great social event but they are also a great way of fundraising with many local charities taking stalls to raise money for their good causes. The organisers, the Çalış Children’s Charity better known as the 3C’s, raises money to fund projects for local children from the sales of donated items on their committee stall and also from the stall fees (net of the cost of table hire). Every stall holder pays for their pitch and this money contributes towards the total raised by the even bigger, colorful Çalış Carnival. The money raised by the sales, fairs and the carnival will contribute towards various projects chosen by the carnival committee together with Fethiye council members. So far they are funding bursaries for several local students who are studying four year degree courses at universities in Turkey, as well as purchasing much needed equipment for local schools for children with disabilities.
The Çalış event is well organized, well presented and on an enormous scale. Indeed, it is the largest such sale in Turkey. It’s not just a simple car boot sale, but it’s a way of bringing communities together or raising money for charity that will catch on all over Turkey.
If anyone has any unwanted items to dispose of but does not wish to have a stall the 3C’s would be very happy to take these off your hands and can collect them if required. Please ring 0536 373 9520.
