Demolition On The Promenade
Illegal extensions of touristic facilities on Fethiye promenade were demolished down by Zabıta before the eyes of the holiday makers. Zabıta team had warned the business owners before the season starts. Ones who violate the building bylaws were demolished. Some customers took pictures of the scene, while some other left the restaurants.
Citizens said that they were happy with the performance of the Council, however, they could not understand why the restaurants were demolished. “Where have the council been when these facilities were building their illegal extensions? Why did the local officials allow them to build these if they were illegal?” Chairs and beanbags on green area on the promenade were picked up, and concrete grounds, if any, were destroyed to open the green area back. Some facilities prefered to take their extensions away themselves while some were razed to the ground by Municipality teams.
In regard with the demolition, Mayor Behçet Saatçi said “No one, even if inherited from his father, can use this land so vulgar. We are not after anyone’s profit. We can only be happy if Fethiye trades make money. If you have money, life is easier. Facilities on the promenade have increased in number and a particular discipline is inevitable. This demolition is to prevent any further problems.”
