Genius child of the violoncello Benyamin Sönmez passed away on November 30, 2011 at the age of 28 after a heart attack in Ankara. Following a funeral ceremony in front of Fethiye Municipality Cultural Center his body was laid to rest in Fethiye. The funeral was attended by his relatives and his friends, and after reading his life story his elder brother Mehmet Sönmez, currently a member of Turkish Presidential Symphony Orchestra made a speech.
Mehmet Sönmez said his brother is gone but his music will live forever. His piano accompanist Gulmira Tokombayeva who was also present at the funeral said that Turkey has lost a great talent. Tokombayeva said “He was such a talented boy. He was incredible. Such musicians come maybe once in a century, but no other Sönmez will come again.”
“WE LOST OUR BELOVED ONE”
Benyamin Sönmez’s uncle Seyran Sucu said “Turkey has lost a great musician, a great talent. But we lost our beloved one.” Following the funeral at Culture Center, Sönmez’s body was taken to the Fethiye Yeni Mosque for another ceremony, during which Gulmira Tokombayeva, his conservatory teacher and piano accompanist made a short speech. “He was a genius. He made our hearts bleed. They say every genius is followed by another one but I don’t believe anyone will fill Benyamin’s place.”
The cellist was later buried in Çatalarık graveyard.
