The high wind blowing at the centre and in the villages of Fethiye on April 7, Sunday had a higher impact in Kayaköy.

The high wind has blown the terrace roof of Levissi Garden of Kayaköy away. As there were no customers at the terrace at that moment, a big disaster has been prevented. Parked cars have been damaged by the falling pieces from the roof.

Hakan who has been the manager of Levissi Garden since 2006 said, “We were dealing with our customers as usual on Sunday. When the wind started blowing, we took our customers to inside, but at that moment the wind got higher and blew our roof terrace away so our customers panicked a lot. Cars in the park of our restaurant have been damaged. Our only consolation is that there is no loss of life. The audio systems, light systems, tables, chairs and service sets on our terrace have become unusable now and our loss is above 20 thousand TL.”

Ms. Meltem who was at the restaurant that day explained, “We were sitting at the terrace. The wind started blowing too much so we went inside. Everything happened at that moment. The wind got higher and blew the roof away. We were inside thankfully; otherwise there would be losses of life. Cars in the car park were damaged but it is vital that there is no loss of life. I hope Hakan will get better soon.”

The lack of a cruise port makes Fethiye miss 100 thousand rich tourists and 14 million TL every year. As Fethiye still does not have a cruise port, liners and big ships cannot enter the town. Passengers in liners and cruises who can only watch the town from distance are carried by boats to our town if they want to stop by and see Fethiye closely. The fact that Fethiye does not have a cruise port although the town has opportunities draws several reactions. Fethiye Chamber of Commerce and Industry has shown a different perspective for the necessary cruise port to extend tourism to 12 months and make the town gain a well-deserved income. The Chamber President Akif Arıcan maintained cruise tourism mostly appealed to tourists with high income group and explained the annual loss of Fethiye with numbers. Arıcan stated the place of cruise tourism in the world market was 11 % and as a Mediterranean town, Fethiye should have got a share from European cruise tourism. Arıcan said, “According to the statistics we received in 2011, cruise tourists spend 61 Euro per person in average at the ports of call. In case 100 thousand cruise tourists are welcomed in Fethiye in a year, it is estimated that 100 thousand Euro, which means 14 million 270 thousand TL, will be gained as contribution to the trade in Fethiye. Apart from all these, our region may increase its income undertaking and providing extra functions such as a supply point and maintenance facility. In addition, a possibility to extend tourism to the rest of the year except summer months may be born and increase trade incomes.” On the other hand, The Ministry of Culture and Tourism had announced that Fethiye had been suggested as a port of call with a proposal given in 2010 to the General Assembly of Turkish Parliament for allowing a cruise port in Fethiye. The former Minister Ertuğrul Günay had stated that Istanbul, İzmir and Antalya has been shown as the main cruise ports. According to his formal explanation, Fethiye had been predicted as a port of call with the other important ports including Kuşadası, Alanya, Marmaris, Sinop, Trabzon. It was announced Fethiye was also shown at Turkey Cruise Platform which was founded with the initiatives of İzmir Chamber of Commerce to find common strategies to improve cruise tourism. Fethiye port is listed in the inventories of Turkey cruise ports and harbours made by this platform as well. (FG)

The businessman was killed at Fethiye-Antalya highway by 8 people who tried to steal his money. As a result of comparing the 97 fingerprints found in the scene with 7 million fingerprints nationwide, suspects Murat Y, his girlfriend Yeliz Y and V.D. who were taken under custody were sent to the court with steel vest. The businessman had come from Gölhisar to Fethiye and other villages near the town for white goods sale and after dealing with sales for all day, his van was stopped and he was killed with a gun and knife according to the statements of 4 suspects. After the statements of 4 suspects, 4 more suspects were caught and the police extended the inquiry. The incident happened at the 30th km of Fethiye – Antalya highway where 3 murders had been committed before and the event was revealed based on the fingerprints on the gun and the victim. Fethiye Chief Public Prosecutor and Fethiye Gendarmerie Command teams found fingerprints on the body and gun which was fell near the van and the investigation carried on for 2 months. 97 fingerprints taken from the crime scene by the Gendarmerie Crime Scene Investigation teams were compared with 7 million fingerprints in the entire country. According to the information given by the authorities, the fingerprint on the victim fit with the fingerprint of the retired policeman Murat Y, which was found on the murder weapon and he was taken to technical surveillance. All the security cameras of the nearest petrol stations and markets to the scene at the 30th km of Fethiye – Antalya highway and Nif Arpacık Village where the victim had come for sale were closely investigated one by one. The police also discovered that Murat Y was following the businessman Ali Süslü with his car.

HOW THE INCIDENT HAPPENED
Allegedly, Murat Y, the father of 3 children and retired policeman due to disability, met the businessman Ali Süslü for the bar opened in Dalaman to do shopping with his girlfriend Yeliz Y. Murat Y asked Ali Süslü to borrow money. When things did not go as he expected, he had to close the bar. Due to his debts, Murat Y asked to borrow debt from Ali Süslü almost a week before the murder with Yeliz Y. Ali Süslü harassed Yeliz Y at that moment so Murat Y and his girlfriend got angry at him.
Fethiye Chamber of Commerce and Industry Administrative Board President Akif Arıcan gave information on the arrangements to extend tourism to 12 months in Fethiye: “Our goal is to extend tourism season to 12 months in Fethiye. The projects of our Chamber was shown on the March 2013 issue of ATLAS magazine, which is one of the best seller magazines in Turkey, with the article named “Fethiye Alternative Trekking Roads” and this trekking road suggested on the magazine to nature lovers has been opened with the sponsorship of Fethiye Chamber of Commerce and Industry and it indicates that we are on the right direction. As the Chamber, our projects and researches on several subjects continue. We have published our report on cruise tourism based on our researches on this matter on the latest issue of Makri Magazine. Cruise tourism is a type of tourism that appeals to tourists with high income group. It is usually common at Caribbean seas (46 % of the world cruise tourism), however, the share of Mediterranean in the world market has been increasing in recent years with 11 %. We believe Fethiye should take a share from Europe Cruise tourism as a Mediterranean town. Cruise tourism appeals to tourists with high income group. According to the statistics in 2011, each person from cruises spends approximately 61 euro at a port of call. It is estimated that in case 100.000 cruise tourists are welcomed in Fethiye, 100 thousand Euro, 14 million 270 thousand TL, will be gained as contribution to the trade in Fethiye. Apart from these, our region may increase its income undertaking and providing extra functions such as a supply point and maintenance facility. In addition, a possibility to extend tourism to the rest of the year except summer months may be born and increase trade incomes. Fethiye is represented by our Chamber at Turkey Cruise Platform which was founded with the initiatives of İzmir Chamber of Commerce in order to find common strategies to develop cruise tourism. Fethiye port is listed in the inventories of Turkey cruise ports and harbours made by this platform as well. Surely, these initiatives require long term efforts. First of all, a big port should be made so that liners could land easily, however several associations and establishments should make cooperation to make it possible. We have been dealing with this issue as the Chamber and express our opinions in several platforms.”

6 of 11 trekkers, one of whom was German, were stuck in the mountain due to hard rain and the walking difficulty of 55 year old German Kayser Kerstın. The gendarmerie found the missing people with the mobile phone signals and rescued the nature lovers. The incident happened at around 09.00 p.m. at Dere Ağzı Area near Gökben Village of Fethiye. 11 people who wanted to go on trekking with the trekking guide Ali İHsan Emre went up to Akbel Area at the foothills of Babadağ. The group started trekking to Mount Mendos and taking photos of the plants in the area. Nature lovers were caught in the rain having started at around 02.00 p.m. and soaked. When they reached the foothills of Mount Mendos, German Kayser Kerstın said he could not walk anymore and left himself to the ground. Kerstın, who was called with the name ‘Fatma’ by his friends in Fethiye for nearly 10 years, was taken to Dere Ağzı Area near Gökben village with the help of group members. Group members were caught in the hail and mist here; 6 of them got stuck in the mountain while the others managed to climb down the mountain.

THEY WERE FOUND WITH MOBILE PHONE SIGNALS
Kayser Kerstın, Özlem Zengin, Mert Okçu, Ömür Çizme, Mustafa Bodur and the guide Ali İhsan Emre were stuck in the mountain and called the gendarmerie for help. Fethiye Garrison Commander Major Faruk Akıncı went to the region and gendarmerie teams took Servet Karadereli from Gökben village with them on the road to Dere Ağzı Area as well. Özlem Zengin, Mert Okçu, Ömür Çizme, Mustafa Bodur and the guide Ali İhsan Emre were taken down from the mountain first, then the gendarmerie started the rescue operation for German Kayser Kerstın. Kerstın waited to be rescued for almost 2 hours and the teams reached him at around 07.30 p.m. Kerstın was carried for 1 km on the steep and sloping area by the gendarmerie and left to the hands of AKUT (Search and Rescue Operation) that gave support to the operation. Kayser Kerstın underwent a medical examination and was given water and date palm. Kerstın said he was exhausted and could not carry on: “It rained a lot. I was soaked and cold. I have no fractures or injury on my foot. I just got tired and fell.” Kerstın rested for a while but was not taken to the stretcher due to the danger of freezing and they waited for him to walk for 3 km, and then brought down the mountain.
Mert Okçu and Ömür Çizme were also taken under treatment in the hospital as well. Mustafa Bodur explained they went on trekking to explore the area but the road got slippery due to the severe rain: “Fatma Hanım (Kayser Kerstin) had difficulty because of the rain. We lost the group in the front while we were walking with him. Then the rain got worse. This time, Fatma Hanım could not walk any longer. I climbed down for the rescue operation. Then I climbed up with the gendarmerie again. The rescue operation took almost 3 hours. We had difficulty in rescuing especially due to hard rain.”
The group guide said they planned to go on a nature trekking with 10 people and could not complete the trekking due to rain, fog and mud. Emre explained they called the gendarmerie for help as they could not take German Kerstın down and the mobile phone was broken during the trekking. AKUT Team leader Ersin Gür maintained they just supported the gendarmerie during the operation and said, “In these missing events, we can find our citizens if they call 156 via mobile phone. In this case, we can reach our citizens who lost their leads with GPS.”FG)
