buThe “Respect in Traffic” section of the White Stick Independent Movement Course project organized for the blind citizens by the Municipality of Fethiye, the Six Points Association of the Blind Fethiye Branch and Fethiye Home Volunteers was carried out at the busiest streets of Fethiye. ScienceHigh School students also accompanied the blind citizens who walked on the pavements and tried to cross the streets with white sticks.

The White Stick Independent Movement Course project for the blind had started recently with the supports of the Municipality of Fethiye, the Six Points Association of the Blind Fethiye Branch and Fethiye Home Volunteers. The “Respect in Traffic” project prepared by FethiyeMunicipalityHigh School students have also been added to the program and started to be carried out at the most active streets of Fethiye. The MunicipalityHigh School students accompanying nearly 20 disabled citizens walked on several streets at the town centre. While many citizens helped the disabled, drivers seeing the disabled who were trying to cross the streets gave way to the blind citizens and traffic continued to flow as usual after all the blind citizens crossed the streets. The Six Points Association of the Blind Fethiye Branch President Mehmet Üstün maintained the project went on successfully and said, “The Municipality of Fethiye and Fethiye Home Volunteers organized a common project for the people who lost their sight later and could not sustain their life independently and we have started the white stick independent movement course as the Six Points Association. We have been getting very positive reactions about this project. Our blind citizens will be able to live independently and freely. We would like to thank drivers for their respect and patients. All the obstacles against the disabled should be removed. We can see it as a life project actually.”

“Ayten Taş, the project director and MunicipalityScienceHigh School teacher Ayten Taş, said, “Our project named “Respect in Traffic” was about the decrease in accidents and life losses and especially about the respect to the disabled. As the ScienceHigh School, we are supporting this project of the Municipality of Fethiye, the Six Points Association and Fethiye Home Volunteers. I hope we will achieve a respectful traffic.” (FG)
