Locusts invaded the fields of agriculture

Dodurga Village in Fethiye was infested by locusts. Locusts have damaged the forest area of approximately 100 acres, and 500 acres of agricultural land have far gone. At Kızılcık area, 600 acres of trees are affected, and also the grazing land has disappeared. As a result of locust infestation for three years, farmers stopped planting wheat and barley in agricultural areas.
PESTICIDES TO KILL LOCUSTS
Thousands of locusts devoured clovers, grass and flower plants completely and agricultural pesticide control was initiated to get rid of the invaders. Fethiye District Directorate of Agriculture supports the farmers who spray their fields to make them arable by supplying pesticides and tractors.
A LOCUST HOPS UP WHEREVER WE WALK
Village mukhtar Rasih Mete said they started to fight against the locust. “This area is being infested by locusts for 3 years. We stopped farming because they devour everything. We usually plant wheat and barley on 500 acres of land, but now wherever we walk, a locust hops up.”
Villager Nasuh Özer said the grazing land has disappeared which means a great harm to livestock. He added that they were late for pest control.
Aydın Canboğa who is spraying the area asked the government do something about it.
HIGH LOCUST POPULATION REVEALED IN THE AREA
Fethiye District Director of Agriculture Fırat Erkal provided information about the pest control, and said they ascertained a high population of locusts in the area. “We fight against the locust in cooperation with our farmers in the area. The pesticide we use are recommended by the ministry. We will keep fighting to keep the locust population under control and tom protect our lands.”
