960 meters long and 12 meters wide Göcek Tunnel which was opened in 2006 by PM Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will have a sister tunnel soon.

The long winded story of Göcek Tunnel came up to agenda immediately after AK Party came to power and the base for the tunnel was laid in 2004.  The tunnel was built in the form of single-tube tunnel with two lanes and preparations by General Directorate of Highways for the second tunnel are about to be completed.

13 GOVERNMENTS CHANGED

The construction of the tunnel was first discussed in 1989 under the prime ministership of Turgut Özal, and until 2002, 8 prime ministers, 11 ministers ve 13 governments promised to build the tunnel. It was until 2004 that the base was laid and the construction was completed in 2006. The 960 meter long tunnel was opened by Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, prime minister of the period.

THE DISTANCE BETWEEN DALAMAN-GÖCEK WAS CUT DOWN 15 MINUTES

Due to the double road construction in Muğla, Göcek Tunnel had to be constructed as a single tunnel in 2004-2006. The construction of the tunnel, consisting of 830 metres of tube and 130 metres of open-and-close sections is 8 m high, 12 m. wide with 2 lane traffic  and eliminated the 29 hairpin curves of the original highway reducing the distance between Dalaman and Göcek 15 minutes.

FIRST BOT TUNNEL IN TURKEY

The Gocek Tunnel providing access between Dalaman Airport, Göcek, Fethiye and Antalya was built on the basis of Build-Operate-Transfer. All the work at the tunnel is carried out under the supervision of the General Management of Highways and in continuous collaboration with the Highways to provide safer passage of drivers. It cost 13 million TL and the duration of contract is 20 more years. It takes 45 sec to 1 minute to pass through the 960 m tunnel.

INITIAL PROJECT PREPARED AS A DOUBLE TUBE

The Deputy General Director of Highways Mehmet Peker said “Göcek Tunnel which was opened in 2006 on Kalkan-Fethiye road route is a BOT model and under the supervision of our General Management. It is 960 m long and the duration of contract for the contractor company is 20 years, 24 years excluding the construction period. The initial project of the tunnel was prepared as a double tube and we are working on how to initiate the procedure.”
