There is a serious shortage of belaying docks for yachts and the new marina is an urgent need. At the meeting held at Fethiye Council Chamber this issue was evaluated. Branch managers and biologists of Natural Heritage Conservation Council Serhan Gezmen, Ümit Turhan, Murat Doğru, Emrah Manap, METU Faculty of Civil Engineering associate Prof. Dr. Ahmet Cevdet Yalçıner, Fethiye mayor Behçet Saatçi, Şaban Arıkan, chairman of the Fethiye branch of the Chamber of Shipping, TURMEPA Fethiye Branch Manager Ersin Özer, relevant department chiefs, representatives of civil society organizations and some tourtic business owners participated in the meeting.
In his opening speech Fethiye Mayor Behçet Saatçi said that gulf of Fethiye is polluted, streams need to be improved, the gulf urgently needed a marina and the initiatives to solve all these problems continued.
METU Faculty of Civil Engineering associate Prof. Dr. Ahmet Cevdet Yalçıner said “Şövalye Island is very important to the gulf of Fethiye. We will insert cameras on both sides of this island to examine the traffic in and out of the gulf. According to parameters, a marina with 750 yacht capacity can be constructed in Fethiye gulf. and pollution is reduced even further if the measured values, this figure may vary.
Prof. Yalçıner added that if necessary measures are taken, and factors causing pollution are eliminated, the number can be increased according to demand. “Ece marina can be extended, and a marina can be added next to fishing port, however, even the smallest of the waste the boats must be prevented. Besides, conditions for a cruise ship pier in the gulf can be created. It all depends on planning.”
