Turkey Is Expecting 31 Million Tourists This Year
General Director of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism Cumhur Taşbaşı indicated that the figures in tourists are increasing each year and said “We had 26 million tourists last year, and we expect 31 million this year.”
General Director of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism Cumhur Taşbaşı visited Bodrum Businessmen’s Association.
Taşbaşı gave information about the international promotion fairs and said tourism in Turkey gained acceleration. “This year, we had the largest stand in London exhibition we participated. We had a thousand square meters of area, that is we were the biggest exhibitor. 60 companies and non-governmental organizations participated in the organization. It was more active compared to last year’s exhibition. This is a good indicator which says we will have a good toruism year. Europe is undergoing a serious crisis at the moment. This crisis has influenced Germany, Britain and especially Italy. Increase in value of TL and decrease in values of Euro and Pound has a negative effect on us. However, central bank intervention brought a certain balance to foreign exchange. During periods of economic crisis, people reduce their holiday expenditures and prefer short-haul trips instead of long-haul ones. We came together with the hoteliers and had a meeting on this issue. We discussed the rices should not be increased because Turkey is a country glowing in tourism last 4 years. Number of tourists increase each year. We had 26 million tourists last year, and we expect 31 million this year. We should keep this acceleration, so we keep our relations in the sector.”
Taşbaşı said that related to the ongoing crisis in Europe they are likely to give rise to new markets, and in times of crisis, they overcame this situation by making aggressive promotions. “After 2009 crisis,we increased campaigns particularly Iran, the Middle East countries and Russia. Now we start in Brasil and Latin America. By opening new offices in Brazil, Australia and China we will work in the tourism promotion and publicity in these regions, too.”
