Unlicenced Construction In Marmaris Demolished In Ceremony
While “Illegal housing” is again the subject of debate after the earthquake in Van, Marmaris Council started to demolish a giant shopping center with an area of 23 thousand 300 square meters and a multi-storey car park with a ceremony.
In his speech durin the ceremony, CHP Marmaris Mayor Ali Acar said “This structure, which we see as the embodiment of ugliness was stabbed like a dagger at the heart of Marmaris in 1996 with a ‘fait accompli’. The mentality transforming the most important area of our city into a stack of concrete without asking the public, has turned this place into a commercial mass of concrete where should be of common use areas. I’m happy to keep our promise while we were aspiring to work.”
Acar said they aim to turn the public lands on either side of the existing building of which they initiated the demolition into parks and green areas.
Demolishing the building will last for approximately a month and then the construction work for the “Town square” will start. Green areas, artificial waterfalls, water show pools and a clock tower will take place at the square, and it is scheduled to enter service in mid-May.
