Warning for Season 2016-2017
GETOB Administration explained new precautions should be taken for the possibility that tourism season 2016 might go through a rough period considering the effects of terrorism on tourism. GETOB (Southern Aegean Hoteliers and Administrators Union) condemned the state of war in the southern border of Turkey, terrorist attacks in our country and other terrorist attacks against European countries and stated that new safety measures should be taken considering the effects of these incidents on tourism and possible problems in tourism in 2016.
WE MAY FACE A CRISIS IN 2016-2017
GETOB Management had meetings with Thomas Cook, TUI and other tour operators sending tourists from England to Southern Aegean Region and warned at WTM London Fair that we might face decreases and crisis in tourism season in 2016 and 2017. When we consider that the regional economy depends mostly on tourism, the negative effects of terrorism and other incidents might affect all segments of society, warned GETOB management, and invited Mr.Ivor Vucelic, Turkey Products Manager of TUI, to Marmaris to find permanent solutions to these problems. FETOB Executive President, administrative board members and other representatives of accommodation facilities in the region also attended to the meeting being held at the hall of D Resort Marmaris Grand Azur for having shares from the same market and using the same airport.
BÜLBÜLOĞLU: NEW SEASON DOES NOT SEEM PROMISING
Bülent Bülbüloğlu, GETOB Executive President, made the opening speech and said they just returned from WTM London Tourism Fair in England: “Sadly, the situation does not seem promising at all. We are not strong enough in promotions. The current image of our country causes unrest. We should resolve this problem with the support of our Ministry and contribution of our local administrators. Otherwise, the new season does not seem promising at all. If it goes like this, we will have hard times ahead.”
IVOR VUCELIC: WE EXPECT YOUR SUPPORT
TUI Turkey Products Manager Ivor Vucelic and TUI Contract Manager Karen Hollier shared information regarding the decrease of England market in Turkey and explained its reasons to invitees. Vucelic asked the support of accommodation facilities, “The main reason is that Turkey is mentioned with Syria on TV News in the UK and Europe. We do not want to lose Southern Aegean market which is one of our best and strongest markets. We should cooperate to overcome this problem. We are in the process of preparing flight schedules. If you bring your contributions, we will try to increase sales as well.”
“WE SHOULD FOLLOW DIFFERENT WAYS IN PROMOTION”
After TUI Turkey Manager Ivor Vucelic, GETOB President Bülbüloğlu made another speech and stated: “Mr.Ivor Vucelic is right in his demand. However, we have serious problems as the accommodation sector representatives. Our input costs have been increasing on TL basis. We are having difficulty in carrying out our activities. We would like to support tour operators but how? We do not want to lose any of our markets, particularly England market. We should be aggressive in our promotional works and follow different paths in promotion. We can make our promotions featuring Marmaris and Fethiye as Spain brings Ibiza and Mallorca into forefront if necessary.”
“WE SHOULD TAKE SUPPORT FROM EVERY SEGMENT OF SOCIETY”
Bülent Bülbüloğlu pointed out that all the managements and chambers in the entire region should support promotional activities: “This is our mutual problem. We have overcome the decrease in former season thanks to our connections at the Internal Market Tourism Festival without any loss. However, we should make serious moves in cooperation in order to overcome the season in 2016 and 2017 without loss.”
