Tourism Sector in Fethiye Worried for 2016
General and local problems were discussed at 2015 Tourism Evaluation Meeting of Fethiye Hoteliers Union (FETOB).
Tourism professionals stated that they were worried about 2016 tourism season if the problems of 2015 tourism season were not resolved. The meeting took place at Ölüdeniz Belcekız Hotel where Yavuz Torunoğulları, the President of Fethiye Hoteliers Union (FETOB) and TUROFED Deputy President, FETOB Executive Board members and representatives of tourism sector attended.
Yavuz Torunoğulları started his opening speech commemorating martyr soldiers who died defending our country and said: “2015 tourism season is over. What about the next season in 2016? We will follow the process and precautions to be taken by the government for the new season closely. We gathered to discuss these issues.” Torunoğulları stated they brought tourism professionals and members together particularly for asking their opinions for this season, expectations for the new season, local problems and solution offers. Torunoğulları said, “We have seen that the coasts of Muğla and Ölüdeniz are much better than Antalya, Istanbul, Cappadocia regions statistically in tourism season 2015. However, it does not mean that everything goes very well. It is just a comparison. They mostly accused us of winning by the currency. I will give you two examples: Meat and water prices. How will they explain the exchange rates and inflation for the increase in meat prices between this year and last year? The water and solid waste prices applied by Muğla Metropolitan Council will be a good example when you compare the prices which we paid to Fethiye Council last year. We are a sector in a position that encourages sales of tour operators to extend tourism in Turkey until the end of September. If you consider this reality, it will be more ethical. Terrorism, security issues, international political arrangements where Turkey cannot get involved. Our border with Syria is sadly a mess. Our border with Iraq is obvious. There are refugees and uncontrollable population. When we consider all these matters, our first priority for tourism is security. These are the matters that should be resolved by authorities on government base.”
Torunoğulları stated that local problems were particularly discussed at the meeting: “Can we raise awareness with the hoteliers union and mayors of Bodrum, Marmaris and Fethiye locally? We discussed what we can do in co-operation for the crisis. I would like to thank the mayors of this region for not rejecting our demands and attending our meeting.”
Torunoğulları also gave information regarding the arrangements of TUROFED and said threats and dangers against Turkey and solution problems were also discussed: “I told Yalçın Topçu, the Minister of Culture and Tourism, and other bureaucrats that Fethiye Telmessos Ancient Theatre has not been completed yet. The General Manager of Cultural Heritage and Museums told us that they demanded extra budget due to increasing works, this budget was approved but the written approval was expected and it would be finalized in a short time as well.”
